After establishing himself in the Montreal music scene by gaining the support of 7ième Ciel, a powerhouse label in French rap, collaborating with platinum producer High Klassified (Future, The Weeknd), earning a finalist position for the FEQ Rising Star Award at Festival d’été du Québec, and bringing his high voltage live performances to the stages of renowned festivals including M For Montréal and the legendary Montréal International Jazz Festival, Zach Zoya has now dropped his new video for the track In Da Way.
After first collaborating on the eye-popping music video for “Slurpee” which has racked up over 100K views, Zoya has again partnered with Montréal director Le GED for the official “In Da Way” video. From a woozy, out-of-body perspective, Le GED visualizes the dizzying blur of Zoya’s artistic and personal worlds battling against and blending into each other.
Watch it below:
Growing up in the small, largely French-speaking city of Rouyn-Noranda northwest of Montréal, Zach Zoya developed a diverse musical palate from his family. Introduced to African music by his South African father who fled to Canada during apartheid, and North American soul and pop music by his French-Canadian mother, Zoya was immersed in rhythms and melodies that spoke to him even when the English lyrics didn’t.
Produced by DRTWRK, “In Da Way” is a low-key banger laced with confidence as Zoya flows effortlessly between intricate rap bars and smooth R&B tones.
“This song is about how people treat and see you in a different way once you start gaining momentum,” Zoya says. “Some feel left out and they’re gonna want to drag you back to their level. This song is me telling these people, ‘Move over, I’m coming through! Y’all in the way.’ The video represents my climb up from rags to riches, from me being a nobody to becoming a successful figure in my field.”
“In Da Way” is the third official single and second music video from Zoya’s upcoming EP Spectrum which will be released on October 30 via 7ièmeCiel/Universal Music Canada.
Anticipation for Zoya’s major-label debut EP has been building throughout the year with the releases of “Slurpee” and “Le Cap” which already boast over half a million streams and have earned prominent features within the national broadcasts of Games 3 and 5 of the NBA Playoff Series between the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics and in the e-sports team Toronto Ultra’s Home Series Weekend for the Call of Duty League.
