With the state of live music during a Pandemic, I treat every show like it could be my last…at least for a while.
It seems I wasn’t the only one, as I arrived 15 minutes before the opening band and the sold-out limited capacity Petit Campus was already full.
This joyous event was the Relationship Status EP launch Party and what a party it was. (Coming Oct 22, 2021 – Pre-Save Link)
Collin Steinz and Sam Martel are not only partners on stage but in life as well.
Collin has a musical polyamorous relationship with a few local bands, including headliners tonight: What If Elephants.
Both bands acknowledged the hardships of a lockdown and the excitement of playing in front of a live audience.
Collin added that the lockdown gave them time to be vulnerable, which once applied to one’s life, removes the tunnel vision of perspective.
They performed songs off the Anxious, Irrational, Fashionable (2020) EP as well as some new ones.
While Collin creates the R&B backbone of the songs, Sam adds the goosebump layer with her voice.
Both perform with a certain grace, yet familiarity that only being close can bring to the stage.
What If Elephants
When What If Elephants hit the stage, the crowd was ready and proved it.
Collin swapped the velvet bell bottoms for an 80s look the band sported due to the fashion influences of Sam Martel, their unofficial stylist.
Alanna Martin took care of keys and vocals for the guests that couldn’t be there. Justin Wiley kept the beat alive with his masterful drums.
If Flara K gave us goosebumps, What If Elephants dared us to defy the rules and dance.
Alas, the best most could do is do the chair groove. Arms were waving, and feet where tapping, but butts obediently stayed in the seats.
WIE played a combination of older songs, as well as some of the newer infectious pop bangers.
If you mention the name “Joey” to almost anyone in the Montreal music scene, you will always get one of the following descriptors: Best, awesome, kind, talented and nice.
It’s no wonder that so many artists love collaborating with the band, such as Flava K on Guilty Pleasure, Maya Malkin on Sugar Daddy, Namelle on Fighting for You and tonight’s special guest BAYLA for Building Me UP.
The band delighted the crowd and all in attendance had a great time, celebrating this EP launch and their return to the stage after such a crazy year and a half.
What is my verdict on Relashionship Status? I’m going to swipe right!
